Derby Overlooks 117: Halloween

Derby Overlooks 117: Halloween

This weeks derby theme on Shirt Woot is “Halloween 09”, which has yielded a lot of drama over rejections and cats in pumpkins… including 4 parody entries to date and angry tirades from all over. I’ve managed to stay out of it for the most part. However, like last week, there are quite a few good entries getting mostly ignored. You’d just have to shift through an INSANE amount of entries to get to them. I have looked through all of the entries and these were the ones I thought seem to be sadly overlooked. Based of course on my own tastes, your millage may vary.

I’ll start from the least votes and go up to the most.

Shirt Woot’s derby is a bit weird. To vote you’ll need to have purchased at least one thing from any of the 4 Woot sites. Once you have purchased something that account can then vote in the Derby. You may vote for as many shirts as you want and remove any of the votes at any time.

Okay so now that that’s out of the way here are the shirts that I like and think need some support.

Boo! – Currently at 86 votes

I have a thing for clean iconic art styles and this hits pretty square on. I like that it’s the boy scaring the ghost with a boo and not the other way around. I also like that the design has a texture to it, both on the boy and in the background.

I really like how each of the three zombie fighters are distinct and interesting and that the animals are both cute and disturbingly dispatched. There’s a bit of gore in this image but I rather like cute with a messed up twist. LOL, also the zombie fighters are in costume themselves but in a subtle way, which will be a nice touch for non Halloween shirt wearing.

His boo is worse than his bite – Currently at 117 votes

I really like this simple repeating pattern of ghosts getting bigger as they go. It’s like that little ghost is powering up to make a really powerful boo. It’s better that the resulting boo is a small affair, like even though the ghost got bigger and bigger that the resulting boo was still only the size he was… then again I’m probably thinking too much about this image. LOL. The colors are really nice and it’s cute.

Witch and her Broom – Currently at 124 votes

An appealing art style that I, so far, haven’t seen much on Woot. This is a relatively simple image of a girl dressed as a witch that is totally transformed by the added touch of her dog being dressed up as the broom. I wish this image had more little twists like that to bring out more of the charm of the image.

I really enjoy the style these guys are drawn in and the slight old fashioned touches. Like the fact the colors are offset, so they are slightly out of the lines, and also the use of Heather grey contribute to gaving this image a vintage feel.

Another art style that really appeals to me is this slightly scratch board like inking style. A very good use of minimal color and placement. I like the shape and feel of this image. The characters are appealing and dynamic, soft and yet there is a sense of menace to the image. Impending death or sorrow await this couple, but for now everything is okay.

Anyway please give these guys some love if you like them as well. I’m thinking my tastes aren’t universal or anything but it seems like some of these designs are just lost in the crowd at the moment.

For the sake of being fair I haven’t mentioned my entries. But if you’d like to look at them you can always go to the main page and scroll down past this entry.
